Some thoughts..

Standard

If there’s anything I’ve learned in my few years of life is not to be afraid of who I am. There are so few people that can really speak their mind nowadays, mostly because they are embarrassed and that is simply wrong.

I was very shy as a child. I used to hide under the table when guests came over and pretend I was invisible, because I didn’t want to talk to them. I am shy now, as well, which is very often perceived by people as arrogance. I am not a people person, mainly because I enjoy being on my own, I like to lose time inside my own mind ( which, frankly, more people should do) and I find social chatting exhausting. However I do get lonely, and that is what my few friends are for. I will only make the first move if a person really interests me, otherwise I’m pretty quiet. My mother always told me that this is not a bad thing and I should embrace who I am, what I am, because if I don’t get myself, no one ever will, and I know she is never wrong. She goes as far as to be proud of having a rather ‘strange’ (as she puts it) kid.

I think it is important to take some time for yourself, too. Call it meditation, or thinking, or however you want, but being on your own, just discovering yourself can be extremely fascinating. There is so much that you don’t know about who you are, things that are so interesting to find out, that you should know. Just as you leave some time to meet your friends for a coffee, put some time aside to meet with your own thoughts. Wander around your mind, read books that change your perspective on the world, listen to music, analyze your dreams, do things that make you happy. There’s only one you in this entire universe, and if you don’t think that is spectacular, you are so wrong.

Because, if there’s one thing I learned is to appreciate my own self and accept and appreciate the diversity of people around me. Surround myself with other types of people, people that will challenge me, help me grow and people that will bring out the best in me. That is the only way to find happiness, in the friends that laugh with you and in your own infinite mind.

Inspirational board on war

Standard

I have for my literature class a very interesting essay: The importance of militating for peace.
While I could probably talk hours and hours about this subject, it seems hard to put my ideas on a page, so I’m going to use this post as an ‘inspirational board’ and expose my thoughts on the subject.
Why is peace important?
Because it lets our society develop beautifully, in a background where harmony and happiness reign and not terror. For that is what war means, right? It means cruelty and death and hate more than any mind can imagine. It means destroying worlds and cultures. It means promoting something wrong, promoting an ugly world.
People weren’t born soldiers. People were born out of love, to create, to think, to share ideas, spread intelligence. People were born lovers, musicians, discoverers. They were made curious and always wondering and turning them into weapons is where the tragedy starts.
Leading men towards men is nothing to be proud of, is nothing honorable.

I could talk, and talk but we all know what there is to say here. War doesn’t belong to this world and should never again be part of it.

Love, M.

P.S. Leave your own thoughts and opinions and help me write a decent essay 😀

Things you’ve probably never thought about

Standard

Not a single one of your ancestors has ever failed in getting laid (Most people on tumblr will probably break the chain)

If you are 80 years old, you have lived through over 1/3 of America’s history

At one point, you were the youngest person in the world.

If a woman who is an only child has all boys (or no children at all), they are ending a chain of women that has been going since we were single-celled organisms.

The average human is a 28 year old Chinese man.

Dinosaurs were alive for longer than they have been extinct.

You breathe using just one nostril, then switch to the other 30 minutes later. Repeats for life. (After reading this pay attention)

In 30 or 40 years, people will be having 2000s parties. Just like now people throw “dress like the 70s” parties.

John Lennon is part of a group that has sold more CD’s than anyone else in the history of human life, and he never knew what a CD even was.

Grossness and morals define each other. For example, you won’t spit in the mouth of your girlfriend, yet you will kiss her.

You spend years seeing the same people often and you’ll never exchange words with them.

People hundreds of years from now will stumble upon your image without thought or emotion.

Everyone dies within six months of their birthday.

50% of all doctors graduated in the lower half of their class.

Mammals are just containers water uses to move itself from one place to another.

Many peoples most cherished beliefs come from 1st century writers and religious fanatics whose understanding of the natural world was below the level of a modern 5 year old.

The “food pyramid” that most of us grew up with was published by the US dept of agriculture. Their job is to promote agriculture, not to promote healthy eating.

80% of the images on the internet are of naked women.

If we ever meet superior aliens they will simply classify us under “violent, irrational apes” and will not be amazed by our art or philosophies, the same way we boringly classify newly discovered animals every year.

When the sun goes out, our descendants that watch it go out won’t be human.

When you’re about to die, you’ll regret all the days you took for granted.

The youngest mother in medical history was 5 years old. It makes you wonder about the generation gap for the people around you. Your best friend could be a thousand generations ahead of you. Your boss could be a hundred generations behind you. Makes sense considering he’s an asshole.

We magnify the differences between us, instead of the things that make us similar. You are not really any different than anyone else on earth that is your age, yet you feel like you are just because they speak a different language, eat different food, worship a different imaginary creature, or live somewhere else. In reality, we are all the same species living on the same planet. To bears, we probably look exactly the same.

Jukebox Friday

Standard

Today I chose a song that is and has been for a long while very dear to me:

Mad World – Gary Jules

This is a song I was listening to non-stop, whenever I came home from school. I love it because, although it is a still song, it’s very deep and whoever listens to it feels it. It’s a true song, that fits societies and people all around. Most of all it is a song about routine and the sickness of it, about every day life, about everyones life. And, of course, it’s a song that defines our very, very mad world.

Lyrics:
All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for the daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere

Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I wanna drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow

And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I’m dying are the best I’ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you, I find it hard to take
When people run in circles its a very, very
Mad world, mad world

Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy birthday, happy birthday
And I feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen

Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me, what’s my lesson?
Look right through me, look right through me

And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I’m dying are the best I’ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you, I find it hard to take
When people run in circles its a very, very
Mad world, mad world, enlarging your world
Mad world

Read the lyrics very carefully.

The man in the square

Standard

As my dad picked me up from school today I heard a very interesting story on the radio. It was about a man in our city, that feeds the pigeons at the main square.

Avram is a an old man that for 10 years now has been feeding the pigeons every day. He comes 5-6 km by foot just to bring several bags with seeds for the birds. Some reporters very intrigued by his story and asked him about his life, and the purpose of his strange act. He said

Pigeons are kinder and warmer than people.

Whenever he comes in the square, hundreds of pigeons follow him, trying to find a royal place on his shoulders and if not, at least to get some seeds off the ground.

This man is at least interesting and his story caught my eye. The way people interact with animals is sometimes amazing. Avram said he will always come to bring food for the pigeons. Asked how is dealing with the cold weather outside and the snow the man simply replied:

Even on cold weather, the pigeons still need me.

Learning time: The picture of Dorian Gray

Standard

My throat hurts horribly, so I was stuck at home for the day. I can’t complain, though: being sick has its advantages. Whenever I get a day off school is a day of celebration, despite the finals approaching quickly ( Fridaaay, fridaaaay ).
To make time fly quicker I decided to watch Dorian Gray. I have read the book before, and I am a huuge fan of it. Huge. Immense. So I had quite high expectations from the movie. In vain, it appears, because the movie had absolutely nothing to do with the book. I can’t even review them together for instance.

The Book

Everybody knows and has heard of Oscar Wilde. Every page that I was reading I tried to store in my memory and never forget. That is how he writes. He is sarcastic, has a lot of monologues, all as memorable.

Expectations

I was waiting to see a blond, angelic, blue-eyed Dorian with a superior and always sarcastic Harry. I was waiting for a movie that actually followed the plotline. Last but not least, I was expecting more quotes from the book!! The scenery was… Just wrong. All those quotes I had underlined didn’t even appear in the movie.

Oh, oh and the end. Why…why would you change the most perfect ending a book has ever given to you? Why??

Reality

Dorian was played by a very talented actor, it was all good and nice. Except that the actor was brunette, with dark eyes. And had absolutely nothing to do with the description in the book.
Colin played… Well, flawless, as always a character that did not suit him at all.

Bits were changed, the ending was changed and it was a bit too..much.

I mean… We all got that Basil was obsessed with Dorian. That's the beauty of it. The not knowing if something ever happened between them.

You don’t just make them kiss and..!!

Buuuuut, this is just how I see it. Maybe it’s a little harsh. But that’s just because I’m a big fan of the book and the movie changed it too much.

Anyone read it/ seen the movie? What was your opinion? 🙂

Jukebox Friday

Standard

My dearest, dearest everyone,

I carry good news 🙂
To make my blog more entertaining, and more enjoyable for you I decided to do a Friday jukebox. What does that mean? Every Friday evening I will pick a song ( song of the week/ favourite song/ songs I can’t get enough of) and post it right here.
Sounds good, right? I hope so. And because you can only understand a song by its lyrics I will post them, too.

Moreover, I will link the song to a memory/ a ship ( which, in case you don’t know, is a couple, or two persons you wish they were together. )

P.S. If you ever want to have your favourite song posted here and discussed, just post a comment below and you’ll listen to it next Friday on my blog 🙂
Now lets quit chatting and here’s my song :

It’s a weird choice, I know, but I can explain. My mother has loved George for a very veeery long time, so inevitable I know all his songs. It’s not, or better said was not, one of my favorites, Jesus to a child. Only recently I have discovered its story and the fact that it is dedicated to his lover, a man that died when George was still very young. From what I have learned, he died of HIV and the singer suffered hugely afterwards.
I couldn’t get the song out of my head or out of repeat today. It manages to transport you in a different state of mind. It’s impressive how 5 minutes manage to amaze the unimpressed.
So, listen to it carefully, give it a try, because it is worth it. It is a beautiful ode dedicated to love and death both, sang by the angelic voice of George Michael.

Tip: try to listen to it while reading the lyrics. It’s a very interesting feeling.

Lyrics:
Kindness In your eyes
I guess You heard me cry
You smiled at me
Like Jesus to a child

I’m blessed I know
Heaven sent And Heaven stole
You smiled at me
Like Jesus to a child

And what have I learned
From all this pain
I thought I’d never feel the same
About anyone
Or anything again

But now I know
When you find love
When you know that it exists
Then the lover that you miss
Will come to you on those cold, cold nights

When you’ve been loved
When you know it holds such bliss
Then the lover that you kissed
Will comfort you when there’s no hope in sight

Sadness In my eyes
No one guessed
Or no one tried
You smiled at me
Like Jesus to a child

Loveless and cold
With your last breath
You saved my soul
You smiled at me
Like Jesus to a child

And what have I learned
From all these tears
I’ve waited for you all those years
And just when it began
He took your love away

But I still say
When you find love
When you know that it exists
Then the lover that you miss
Will come to you on those cold, cold nights

When you’ve been loved
When you know it holds such bliss
Then the lover that you kissed
Will comfort you when there’s no hope in sight

So the words you could not say
I’ll sing them for you
And the love we would have made
I’ll make it for two

For every single memory
Has become a part of me
You will always be My love

Well I’ve been loved
So I know just what love is
And the lover that I kissed
Is always by my side

Oh the lover I still miss
Was Jesus to a child
